Australia today views respect for diversity as a core national value. The successful integration of immigrants into civic life is a matter of intense national pride. As in Canada, in Australia, individuals of diverse ethnic, religious and national origins come together without erasing their differences in a framework of shared citizenship. A commitment to valuing diversity now runs deep in the Australian psyche. However, not all citizens have benefitted equally, among them indigenous people.
