Building and Site Renewal

The building at 330 Sussex Drive is a well known landmark in Canada's capital. First classified as a historic site in 1955, its historical importance resides in its:

  • association with the archives and the war museum;
  • architecture, notably its main facades, successful structural design and plan, and Tudor-Gothic style; and
  • fine setting on Sussex Drive adjacent to the Royal Canadian Mint and the National Gallery of Canada.

The Global Centre for Pluralism will be a good steward of 330 Sussex Drive, respecting both its past as the home of two national institutions and its obligations as a fixture on Confederation Boulevard – the ceremonial route through Canada’s national capital.

The rehabilitation of the structure and site is expected to take some years to complete.  A leading Canadian architect will be engaged to envision the property, bearing in mind and respecting its heritage qualities. As part of this process, the Centre is also working with the National Gallery of Canada and the National Capital Commission to develop a joint approach to street and riverfront renewal.
